Elephant Wrecking Ball perform “She’s Not Bringing Me My Sandwich Tonight” at Second Story Garage.
Elephant Wrecking Ball’s music matches its name in the sense that the rhythm the trio creates stomps around with strength and aplomb. On the other hand, it’s so precise the band could have called itself something like Surgical Knife. Bassist Dan Africano and drummer Neal Evans lock in tight, and their beats cut deep. This is all to support the trombone stylings of Scott Flynn, who takes a Jimi Hendrix approach to exploring the possibilities of his instrument. Flynn pumps his sounds through electronic processors so that what listeners hear is a soundscape far beyond the mere foreground of wind blown through metal.
You might recognize Flynn as a member of the horn section of the Boston band John Brown’s Body. Elephant Wrecking Ball is based in Brooklyn, and they swung by the Second Story Garage studio during a mini-tour of Colorado.
