Analog Son remains true to the art of funk

By Sonia Amodeo
In a world where digital music reigns, it can be difficult to find solid, authentic funk.
But Denver funk group Analog Son is aiming to fill that void by revitalizing the spirit of the genre. The band will perform at the Fox Theatre, 1135 13th St., Boulder, on Friday night as opening act for legendary saxophonist Maceo Parker, who famously worked alongside James Brown.
Analog Son, formed by Jordan Linit and Josh Fairman in 2013, weren’t shy in expressing enthusiasm of sharing a stage with such a “legendary influential musician.”
Analog Son’s unique live shows encompass a rotating cast of players, featuring collaborations with what Fairman called “the cream of the crop” — members of The Motet, The Shady Horns, The New Mastersounds, Lettuce and Dumpstaphunk, among others.
And Analog Son is more than just a name — the group brings back the vintage by recording and performing purely with analog equipment.
Linit said Analog Son record and mix on tape machines and an analog board, which “is very rare,” to create a warmer feel.
“We’re bringin’ it back, retro-style,” Fairman said.
The difference can be seen on stage, too. Analog Son creates a high-energy dance party, complete with groovy beats, colorful improvisations and a vintage vibe.
“We work on live variations and improvisations,” Linit said, “so every show you see will have different takes on the same song. You’ll hear lots of exciting new things.”
Analog Son released its sophomore album Stomp And Shout in March to warm acclaim, and have since recorded more than half of their next album, Linit said.
The band is also on the lineup for Loveland’s ARISE Festival on Sunday.
