Danny Shafer does just fine as a solo musician. With his rich voice and solid songs — even his long, flowing hair — he is the very image of the singer-songwriter.

But he’s also a natural frontman.

His band, The 21st Century, hasn’t performed in a while. But that’ll change on Saturday, May 31, when they take the stage at the Fox Theatre in Boulder.

“This is a nice way for us to be able to say, ‘We’re back,’ ” Shafer said. “ ‘We’re back and playing.’”

The band includes a new bass player, Jim Sullivan, and new material.

“We have quite a few new songs,” Shafer said. In fact, Shafer is preparing to record a new album, and he hopes to hit the studio next month.

The 21st Century generally has a country-rock sound, but as Shafer says, it can veer into other genres, even “a big E Street Band” feel.

Also on Saturday’s lineup are Gipsy Moon and The Zimmermans. Shafer is a fan of the latter, a Bob Dylan tribute act.
