Boy & Bear perform ‘Old Town Blues’

Boy & Bear perform “Old Town Blues” at Second Story Garage in Boulder, Colorado.

Boy & Bear are huge in their home country of Australia. They’ve already sold out one show in September at the Sydney Opera House and have added a second night. In 2011, their debut album, Moonfire, won five Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) awards, which are like our Grammy Awards.

Now they’re on tour in support of their latest release, Harlequin Dream, and we got them into the Garage when they came to Colorado last month to perform at Red Rocks for the Film on the Rocks series. Shortly after their appearance in our studio, they took their show to “Conan.” Pretty good company, we’d say.

Boy & Bear is Dave Hosking (guitar and lead vocals), Killian Gavin (guitar), Tim Hart (drums, guitar), Jon Hart (keys and mandolin) and Dave Symes (bass, though he played percussion on a guitar case when he was in the Garage — yes, a guitar case — and it sounded pretty awesome). They play a style of Americana (or is it Australicana?) that Mumford & Sons mainstreamed, except it dispenses with some of the faux-19th century trappings, and you don’t have to be embarrassed about listening to it with your friends around.

They performed their hit “Southern Sun,” as well as “Old Town Blues” and “Three Headed Woman,” then chatted with Quentin.

What they brought us: A Boy & Bear tote bag.
