Second Story Garage: Cabinet

Cabinet perform “Celebration” at Second Story Garage music video studio in Boulder, Colorado.

Pappy Biondo has a nonchalant, almost cavalier approach to fulfilling his vocal duties in Cabinet. He opens his mouth to sing, but not much beyond the necessary amount. His delivery sometimes has a talk-sing quality to it. But it’s not as if he’s being lazy or seems bored. He’s being true to the band’s overall vibe, which is half-front porch, half-after midnight.

Cabinet is from the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area in eastern Pennsylvania, and a touch of Appalachia marks much of the band’s sound. With a mix of drum-fueled rhythm and bluegrass instrumentation, Cabinet has explored a path of Americana much followed by Colorado audiences. The band traveled to the state last month for a set of local shows, including a session at the Garage.

During their Garage set, members JP Biondo on mandolin, Mickey Coviello on guitar, Pappy Biondo on banjo, Dylan Skursky on bass, Todd Kopec on fiddle and Jami Novak on drums played the songs “Home Now,” “Pine Billy” and “Celebration.” That last one is the title track from Cabinet’s new album, which they released last month. After the session they talked with Quentin about the album.

What they brought us: A “contraband” baseball they had been throwing around to warm up before shows on their recent tour.
