Second Story Garage:
Jeff Austin Band

Jeff Austin and Eric Thorin of the Jeff Austin Band perform “Rag Doll” at Second Story Garage music video studio in Boulder, Colorado.

This is Jeff Austin’s break from Yonder Mountain String Band. After a successful run as frontman for the Nederland four-piece jamgrass group, Austin is stepping out this month with the release of a new solo album, The Simple Truth.

In recent months, Austin has taken this material to live audiences with his new band, which includes banjoist Danny Barnes, guitarist Ross Martin and Lyons bassist Eric Thorin.

Last week, Austin and Thorin gave us a two-song duo version of their live material, the first time they’d tried it that way. We heard “Rag Doll” and “15 Steps.” Listen to them tell Quentin about what it’s like to record at eTown in Boulder.

Fans will see the fire that made Austin such a compelling performer in Yonder Mountain, and his new band knows how to take jams where they need to go, just like his old band. But the solo Austin also sounds to be expanding his musical vision.

The Jeff Austin Band has local shows planned for Friday, Feb. 6, at the Bluebird Theatre in Denver, and Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Fox Theatre in Boulder. The supporting acts are Sarah Siskind and Caribou Mountain Collective.
