Kutandara perform ‘Nhemamusasa’

Kutandara perform “Nhemamusasa” at Second Story Garage.

First, some background: The Kutandara Center offers classes in Zimbabwean-style marimba, African drumming, an instrument called the mbira and traditional African songs and chiShona. Its top students perform as the Kutandara Marimba Experience.

What you’ll see in our videos is just a small selection of that performing group. We can fit only so many marimbas in our little Garage. But even with diminished numbers, Kutandara still put on a bouncing, smiling display of two traditional songs: “Nhemamusasaa” and “Moyo Wangu.”

There’s a lot to know about the Kutandara program and the musical traditions, but instead of trying to tell you ourselves, we’ll let you hear about it in the group’s interview with Ashley.

What they brought us: Marimba mallets. Now we need a marimba.
