Mountain Standard Time perform “No One Sees” at Second Story Garage.

Mountain Standard Time has gone through several lineups, but it has long been lauded by fans as among the best of Colorado’s many progressive bluegrass groups. And its current lineup has the band ticking with new energy.

With a drummer, keyboards and electric bass filling out a sound that is tied to tradition with acoustic guitar and mandolin, the band asserts its mission to take bluegrass into the future. Bands such as Leftover Salmon and The String Cheese Incident demonstrated on a national scale the power of this approach, and MST reminded us of that power when they visited Second Story Garage.

Stan Sutton, the guitarist and sole remaining founding member, picks out leads at a pace that can seem to make time stand still. Nick Dunbar is equally adept on mandolin, and the two double on sweet harmonies that recall the great singing traditions of bluegrass.

The band recently finished a new EP, called “Sunny,” which will be released as part of a string of Front Range shows. They include a Feb. 8 appearance at the Bluebird Theater in Denver and a Feb. 9 show at Fox Theatre in Boulder. The concerts also include opening sets from Dead Winter Carpenters and a guest appearance by Yonder Mountain String Band’s Jeff Austin.
