Second Story Garage: Town Mountain
Town Mountain perform “Long Time Comin’ ” at Second Story Garage in Boulder, Colorado.
Town Mountain came through the Boulder area last month to play RockyGrass, one of the most prestigious annual bluegrass gigs in the nation. A day before they took the festival stage, they swung by the Garage.
Town Mountain’s music owes as much to Hank Williams as it does to Bill Monroe. It’s got a honky-tonk edge to it that comes especially from singer Robert Greer’s voice. The band, which is based in Asheville, North Carolina, favors country traditions over the jammy tendencies of many contemporary ‘grass acts. Greer’s cowboy hat is the real thing.
They combine tasteful instrument playing and solid harmonies with expert songwriting to produce the sort of songs that you believe past, present and future bluegrass fans could all enjoy equally.
The band played “Whiskey With Tears,” “Tick on a Dog” and “Long Time Comin’.” The latter two are new songs, and “Long Time Comin’ ” is so new the band decided to spell “Comin’ ” with an apostrophe just moments before they performed the song in the Garage. Afterward, Town Mountain talked with Quentin about the live album they’re releasing Aug. 19.
