SunSquabi perform ‘Thunder’
SunSquabi perform “Thunder” at Second Story Garage music video studio in Boulder, Colorado.
Boulder is a breeding ground for electronic music infused with live instruments, and SunSquabi is the style’s latest success story. The three-member group formed in 2011 and has maintained an impressive schedule of EP, album and remix releases. The band’s latest release, the Thunder EP, came out in December, and they’ve got another album in the works, set for release in 2015.
It’s looking to be a breakout year for the band, which announced this week it will play Red Rocks in September, in support of GRiZ. Confirmation of their place on the lineup came together during their visit to Second Story Garage, which maybe explains the extra bite in the set we recorded.
During the session, SunSquabi — Kevin Donohue on guitars and synth, Andrew Clymer on bass and synth and Chris Anderson on drums — played “Thunder,” “Wizard” and “Hustlin’.” They also sat down with Quentin to talk about their sound.
This is music with obvious party potential and concert hall appeal. But the musicianship of its members makes SunSquabi just as fun to watch in the studio.
What they brought us: A signed snare drum head that was used on the band’s last tour.
